About This Quote

In this quote, Marcus Andronicus and Titus Andronicus are discussing the current situation in Rome, specifically the civil war. Marcus Andronicus is inciting Titus Andronicus to join in the fight against Emperor Caesar, but Titus Andronicus is reluctant because he is a coward. He feels that he will not be able to “storm” and that he may die before his time. One can interpret this quote in a number of ways.

The most obvious interpretation is that the only way to succeed in something is by going all out and putting everything on the line. The second interpretation is that one should never give up. When people give up, they are admitting defeat before they even begin.

In this case, Titus Andronicus refuses to admit defeat however even though he is a coward. His refusal to admit defeat leads him to die from a wound received during battle with his uncle.
